Apple Says A number of Billion Dollars Set Apart for U.S. Taxes

Na | Septemba 3, 2016

Apple’s chief executive says the company has put asideseveral billion dollarsto pay tax liabilities in the United States as it repatriates some of its huge overseas earnings.

Tim Cook told Irish state network RTE in an interview broadcast Thursday that the money, part of profits from 2014, should be brought back to the U.S. next year. He did not specify how much would be repatriated.

Apple holds nearly $215 billion in cash and securities outside the U.S., much of that generated by its Irish subsidiaries. Cook has complained in the past that high U.S. taxes have discouraged the company from bringing those earnings home.

This week, the European Union ordered the company based in Cupertino, California, to pay $14.5 billion in back taxes to Ireland plus billions more in interest.

The tax dispute is part of an ongoing fight over whether America’s largest global corporations pay adequate taxes throughout the world.

Apple plans to fight the EU order, which Cook characterized as unfair. He told Irish television that the EU’s findings aremaddeningand that the company had not received special treatment from Irish authorities.

In Brussels, EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager vigorously defended the legality and arithmetic of the tax clawback order affecting Apple.

This is a decision based on the facts of the case,” she told a news conference at EU headquarters. Vestager said figures used to calculate the amount of back taxes owed by Apple came from the company itself, as well as U.S. Senate hearings. [php snippet=11]

Google Ditches Undertaking Ara Modular Telephone Ambitions

Na | Septemba 3, 2016

In May, Google promised to launch a developer edition of its Project Ara modular smartphone by the end of the year and take a consumer version to the market in 2017. Those ambitions, hata hivyo, have apparently been shelved.

Google had touted its modular computing platform as a game-changer, not only for smartphones but for other devices as well. The project envisioned creating an ecosystem of snap-in/snap-out components that would enable users to customize their devices on the fly with cameras, speakers, extra storage and even health modules such as glucometers to help diabetics test their blood sugar levels.

Citing two unnamed sourceswith knowledge of the matter,” Reuters today reported that Google was making anabout-facewith Project Ara. Hata hivyo, Reuters noted that the company might still work with partners to eventually bring the technology to the consumer market.

Aimed at Unifying Hardware Efforts

Axing Project Ara is one of the first steps in a campaign to unify Google’s various hardware efforts, which range from Chromebook laptops to Nexus phones,” the Reuters report noted. Rick Osterloh, formerly president of Motorola, which Google sold to Lenovo in 2014,rejoined Google earlier this year to oversee the effort,” according to Reuters.

Speaking with the tech publication 9to5Google, Project Ara founder Dan Makoski said he was saddened at the lack of courage to take it across the finish line.

It’s disappointing to the teams who have worked so hard to make it real, disheartening to the developers hoping to bring their innovations to life, and frustrating to the fans across the world who were so eager to have Ara in their hands,” Makoski said.

The decision will no doubt also disappoint many developers who have been working on apps to support a variety of Project Ara modules. Google had designed the project as an open system that would… [php snippet=11]
